The Village of Cucugnan

Sunday was our fourth day in France.   We left Carcassonne and headed east along the A61 for Abbaye Fontfroide.   Then we set out on the A9 for Fort desSalses (just north of Perpignan).  Late in the day we headed west along the D 117 for Cucugnan, which would be our base for the next three nights.  The D117 runs along the south base of the Corbieres Hills.  It's a wide, level road with great views looking up to the mountain range.  We got our first taste of real mountain driving when we entered the D 19 and drove up to Cucugnan through the Grau de Maury.  We were no longer looking up to the mountains; we were now looking down at the valleys beneath. Narrow roads.  Hairpin turns.  Deep drops to the side.   Not exactly what we were used to at home.

We stayed three nights at La Table du Cure

This is a small hotel with only three rooms on the second floor. Our room (with private bath) was very large and extraordinarily clean. It was a bargin at 50 euros a night. There's a restaurant on the first floor. Breakfast is included. Sandwiches at lunch. Dinner is OK but not as good as the other restaurants in Cucugnan.
